A Champion for Equality, Justice and Football
The football family has lost one of its quiet giants with the passing of Bob Purkiss.
Bob was not someone who sought the spotlight. Instead, he dedicated his life to ensuring that others had the opportunity to stand within it with dignity, equality and respect. His contribution to football, race equality and the trade union movement leaves a legacy that continues to shape the game and the society it serves.
Working alongside the late Sir Herman Ouseley at the Commission for Racial Equality, Bob became one of the principal architects behind football’s modern equality movement. His influence helped establish and strengthen initiatives such as Kick It Out and Show Racism the Red Card, organisations that have transformed awareness, challenged discrimination and created pathways towards a more inclusive game.
For many within football, Bob was far more than an administrator or campaigner. He was a trusted adviser, a principled negotiator and a tireless advocate who understood that lasting change required courage, partnership and persistence.
His work extended beyond football. As a committed trade unionist, Bob believed fundamentally in fairness, collective responsibility and the protection of people whose voices were too often overlooked. These principles guided every aspect of his professional life and earned him the respect of colleagues across sport, public life and the wider equality sector.
Those of us privileged to work alongside Bob witnessed first-hand his unwavering commitment to creating structures that promoted opportunity regardless of race, background or circumstance. Together, with Sir Herman Ouseley and many others, he helped lay the foundations of the equality, diversity and inclusion framework that continues to influence football and sport today.
His legacy can be measured not simply by policies written or campaigns launched, but by the countless lives improved because football became more welcoming, more representative and more courageous in confronting discrimination.
As the football world looks towards its future, it does so standing on foundations built by pioneers such as Bob Purkiss. His work reminds us that equality is not a destination but an ongoing responsibility and one that requires constant vigilance, compassion and leadership.
The Professional Footballers’ Association joins colleagues across football, the wider sporting community and the trade union movement in paying tribute to a man whose integrity, wisdom and humanity enriched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Bob Purkiss leaves behind an enduring legacy of justice, inclusion and service.
May he rest in peace, and may his life’s work continue to inspire future generations to build a game and a society that truly belongs to everyone.
