The Top Six shortlist for the 2024/25 PFA Championship Players’ Player of the Year award has been chosen by PFA members. The winner will be honoured at the 52nd annual PFA Awards ceremony in August.

The PFA Championship Players’ Player of the Year Top Six shortlist includes two players from league winners Leeds United. Ao Tanaka enjoyed an outstanding debut campaign in English football and became a fixture of Daniel Farke’s energetic midfield. He ended the season with five goals and two assists.

He’s joined in the Top Six by teammate Daniel James whose standout season saw him net 12 goals and nine assists as a fixture in the Whites’ midfield. 

Burnley’s return to the Premier League was spearheaded by their captain Josh Brownhill who has been nominated into the Top Six by PFA members after scoring 18 goals from midfield to finish joint runner-up in the league’s top scorers list. 

The Clarets’ goalkeeper James Trafford has also made the shortlist after equalling the all-time EFL record for clean sheets with 29. Trafford conceded just 16 goals throughout the campaign.

Sheffield United narrowly missed out on promotion after a play-off final defeat to Sunderland, but Gustavo Hamer’s outstanding performance over the season has been recognised. The Brazilian provided 10 goals and nine assists in one of his most productive seasons to date. 

Rounding off the nominees is Norwich City’s Borja Sainz. The Spaniard registered an impressive 18 goals and four assists over 41 appearances for the Canaries, ending the campaign as the league’s joint second-highest goalscorer alongside fellow nominee Brownhill. 

All PFA Awards nominees are voted for by the PFA’s membership – the players.
