PFA Sustainability Champion, David Wheeler, has been nominated for Athlete of the Year at the 2023 BBC Green Sport Awards.
The BBC Sport Green Sport Awards recognises and celebrates athletes, former athletes, and organisations making a positive impact by championing sustainability and inspiring change. David shares the nomination spotlight with fellow footballer Sofie Junge Pedersen, alongside notable figures such as Sebastian Vettel, Jacquie Pierri, and Pat Cummins.
David was appointed as the PFA’s first ever Sustainability Champion in February this year. David’s work with the PFA involves creating opportunities for players to share and discuss ideas around climate action and sustainability initiatives, focusing on personal actions they can take but also on practical steps they can lead on within their clubs and communities.
David told the PFA: “I believe climate change is the most significant threat to our way of life and the biggest issue of our time.
“Football can be a huge player in creating positive action around climate change.
“I hope I can help other footballers come forward and use their platform, not just to take positive action but to feel like they can contribute to the conversation.”
During his time as sustainability champion, David has made significant contributions, including participating in a panel discussion on sports and climate change at Glastonbury Festival. Moreover, he also questioned FIFA on it’s claims of carbon neutrality after the Men’s World Cup in Qatar.
We wish David the best of luck! Winners will be announced on the BBC Sport Website on Monday, 2nd October.
