James McClean subjected to online abuse

Stoke City and Republic of Ireland winger James McClean has been subjected to sectarian abuse sent to him on his social media accounts over the weekend.

James took to his social media on Sunday evening to share a direct message sent from a user that included threats to his family. It follows several incidents in the last two weeks, where players have been the victims of unacceptable discriminatory abuse. This can not be allowed to continue.

James has been subjected to this type of vile abuse throughout his career, and he will be fully supported in the same way as any other individual who receives abuse based on their race, religion or nationality.

There is no justification for this or any other type of abuse and the PFA fully stands beside every player who faces discrimination. We advise any player who receives online abuse to press charges wherever possible, to ensure perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

PFA members affected by discrimination can access our wellbeing support, which is available year-round, by calling our dedicated 24/7 helpline on 07500 000 777.
