Mike Thalassitis dies aged 26

Mike Thalassitis, Stevenage

The PFA is deeply saddened by news this weekend that former Stevenage and Cyprus U21 forward Mike Thalassitis has died.

It is believed that Thalassitis took his own life with Police confirming that his death was "not being treated as suspicious" after his body was found in a park close to his home.

Thalassitis signed his first professional contract with Stevenage in May 2011 and made his first-team debut at the beginning of the 2011/12 season.

Thalassitis had loan spells with Boreham Wood, Hayes & Yeading United, Cambridge United, Bishop Stortford and Ebbsfleet United.

Eligible to play for Cyprus, Thalassitis made three appearances for Cypriot U19s and progressed to the U21s – making 4 appearances. In May 2014, he was called up to the Cyprus senior squad ahead their away friendly with Japan. However, he was unable to travel due to suffering a ruptured ACL injury.

It was away from the pitch however that he found fame, appearing on ITV's Love Island in 2017 and E4's Celebs Go Dating last year.

It has been suggested that Thalassitis had been struggling to come to terms with the death of his grandmother, he had moved in with the 94-year-old after her deteriorating health meant she needed a full-time carer.

He had announced his retirement from football following his knee injury and concerns have subsequently been raised about the impact of being involved in reality show, as he is the second Love Island contestant to have died.

The thoughts of everyone at the PFA are with Mike’s family, friends and former-teammates at this terribly sad time.
