We welcome the sentence handed down to Barry Bennell at Liverpool Crown court today.
We hope this brings some closure to not only those named in court but also to the many other victims affected by his crimes. It is a matter for the Crown Prosecution Service whether further charges will be brought.
The length of his sentences reinforces the widespread condemnation for these acts that have ruined so many lives and while this gives no consolation to the victims it does ensure that this dangerous predator is now serving the punishment for his crimes.
While robust safeguards are now in place in the professional game this serial abuse serves to remind us all of the responsibilities for safeguarding we all have to protect those young people entrusted to our care to ensure this never happens again.
