The Chris Mitchell Foundation, working in partnership with the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) Trust and Mark Fleming, Director and Senior Trainer at Positive Mental Health Scotland, are delighted to offer a limited number of fully funded places on NHS Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid Course.
The Chris Mitchell Foundation charity fundraiser event 'A Night at the Races' at Stirling County Rugby Football Club, on Saturday 2 September 2017, was a huge success and we are delighted to announce that the final figure raised came to £6,534.48. We couldn't have wished for a better launch of the foundation and the funds will now be utlisied to deliver a programme of monthly Mental Health First Aid training courses throughout Scotland.
The foundation, in partnership with the SPFL Trust and Mark Fleming, Director and Senior Trainer at Positive Mental Health Scotland, are offering football clubs the opportunity to take positive steps towards safeguarding the mental health and wellbeing of their players and staff by offering a limited number of fully funded places for club representatives from the SPFL, Highland and Lowland Football League, Women’s Premier League and Youth Academies, to attend the NHS Scotland Mental Health First Aid Course. Course attendees will be issued with a certificate of attendance on successful completion, confirming 16 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Mark Fleming delivers a bespoke NHS Scotland accredited Mental Health First Aid Course specifically for people working within the football industry, focusing on the unique pressures experienced by them. The course is aimed at anyone who wants to help someone displaying the signs and symptoms of poor mental health, whether in a professional or personal capacity. Mental Health First Aid is the help given to someone experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained.
The aims of the course are:
- to preserve life
- to provide initial help
- to prevent the problem getting worse
- to promote recovery of good mental health
- to provide comfort.
Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid does NOT teach people to be therapists.
Participants will learn:
- how to ask about suicide
- how to recognise the signs of mental health problems
- how to provide initial help
- how to guide a person to appropriate help.
Who should attend:
Club representatives from the SPLF, Highland and Lowland Football League, Women’s Premier League and Youth Academies. Club representatives include but is not limited to:
- players
- managers
- coaches
- physiotherapists
- club chaplains
- support staff.
Overall, it is envisaged the Mental Health First Aid training courses will provide trained individuals within Scottish football clubs to help and support those suffering from poor mental health and raise awareness on a national scale.
