On Sunday 22nd May, Port Vale Legends will once again host Stoke City Legends in a charity match organised by former striker Tony Naylor.
Naylor is hoping to raise awareness about dementia and Alzheimer’s, a cause close to Vale legend Naylor's heart after his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
The game will be raising funds to support North Staffs Carers Association which offers help, training and support to informal, unpaid carers of all ages who look after dementia patients in the North Staffordshire area.
Naylor is delighted to be returning to ST6 and told www.port-vale.co.uk: “It’s massive. Not just for myself but obviously for the charity involved and the main thing is trying to get as many of the ex-footballers together and for them to appreciate and show their support to the event.”
Two years ago Vale beat the Potters 8-0 in the first Legends Game but Tony expects a much more competitive match this time round.
“After the first game they [Stoke] weren’t too pleased with the score line so they’ve made it perfectly clear that this year they’re going all out to reverse it,” he said.
“From what I’ve heard so far and from the sounds of the sort of players they’re getting together it looks like it’s going to be a very good team and it’s going to be very difficult for us.
“Over the next few weeks we’ll be able to let people know which players are coming but I’m pretty sure it’s going to be really, really competitive this year.”
While he is hoping for an entertaining game, the former Vale striker doesn’t want to lose sight of the real reason behind the event taking place.
“The main thing is that although this is a charity football match and it is Port Vale and Stoke, the main thing is to raise as much money for all those families who are affected by dementia,” he added.
“So we want as many people to come along to support the event as possible.”
