PFA Men's Players' Player of the Year nominee: Luis Suarez (Liverpool FC).
Luis Suárez has bounced back from previous indiscretions and concerns about his long-term future at Anfield to prove he is still the priceless jewel in the Liverpool crown.
Having scored goals for fun in the early part of the season, Suárez went through what some described as a goal drought – a mere five games, actually – before the ‘business as usual’ sign was re-instated.
Yet whilst Reds’ fans had become accustomed to Suárez’s name adoring the goalscorers’ list, his general contribution to the team took on a whole new importance.
Much to the delight and admiration of skipper Steven Gerrard who led the tributes to a player many regard as the best-ever Liverpool No.7. Yes, even better than Keegan and Dalglish.
After Suárez had returned to goalscoring form against Southampton at the beginning of March, Gerrard went on record as saying: “It was a huge win for us and Luis showed once again that he’s an absolute genius.
"People had been talking about him going five games without a goal but his contribution to the team has never wavered. He is very unselfish. At times he’s been asked to play in a wider role and he has shown what a great team player he is.
"Even when he wasn’t scoring, he was still terrorising defenders and creating goals for us. It was a great way for him to celebrate 100 league games for the club. His record is phenomenal”.
