PFA welcomes Hitzlsperger's announcement

Retired footballer Thomas Hitzlsperger has announced that he is gay and hopes to further discussions about homosexuality among professional sportspeople.

The 31-year-old, former German international played in the Premier League for West Ham, Aston Villa and Everton, made the announcement in via German newspaper Die Zeit.

Hitzlsperger stated: "I'm coming out about my homosexuality because I want to move the discussion about homosexuality among professional sportspeople forwards."

As the players union the Professional Footballers' Association are working with the football authorities to encourage an environment that supports any player that chooses to come out either during their playing career or when they retire.

The PFA welcomes Thomas' call to continue moving this important issue forward and look forward to working with him and Robbie Rodgers to ensure a support network is available for any player that wants it.
