The PFA, Premier League, The FA and EFL have joined forces under the banner of ‘Football Remembers’ to mark the Armistice Centenary and Remembrance weekend.

100 years since the start of the First World War, the PFA remembers some of the early members who in their hundreds answered the call of King and Country and swapped the life of a professional footballer for the unspeakable horrors of the Western Front.

The Footballers’ Battalion provided a focal point for the game’s support of the national war effort.

Following the outbreak of war in August 1914, a heated debate took place in the letter pages of national and local newspapers about the continuance of professional football during a time of national crisis.

During the First World War the PFA ceased to exist and following protest the Football League suspended its programme. However, for troops on both sides football played other roles.
