Congratulations to Enda Stevens, the League Two Fans’ Player of the Year for the 2016/17 season.
The EFL League Two Champions Portsmouth owed much to the defending of Enda Stevens, who was instrumental in helping the side concede the fewest goals in the league. This was pivotal to Pompey’s season as they won the title only by goal difference.
Fans have voted on the six-man shortlist that was released yesterday. The shortlist was chosen by our expert panel, which included PFA members and Sky Sports pundits Paul Merson and Peter Beagrie, Mike Riley - general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials, and Malcolm Clarke - chairman of the Football Supporters' Federation.
Enda Stevens received the most votes on the shortlist, with forward John Marquis (Doncaster Rovers), midfielder James Coppinger (Doncaster Rovers), forward Danny Hylton (Luton Town), midfielder Graham Carey (Plymouth Argyle), and midfielder Luke Berry (Cambridge Town) all being nominated.
In total 10,330 votes were cast on the poll. Stevens received 3,740 votes, while last year’s winner, Graham Carey, came second with 3,384.
Stevens played in all but one of Pompey’s 46 games this season, becoming a cornerstone of the rock-solid defence that kept 19 clean sheets.
The left-back made almost 100 appearances for Portsmouth after joining the club in 2015, and was recently named in the EFL League Two Team of the Year. Stevens has previously won Portsmouth’s last two Player’s Player of the Year awards.
The 26-year-old’s stellar season has attracted League One winners Sheffield United, and Stevens has recently signed a three-year deal with the Championship-bound blades.
