This Sunday Port Vale Legends will host Crewe Alexandra Legends in a charity match organised by former striker Tony Naylor.

Naylor, who played for both clubs and aims to raise money for two locally nominated carers' organisations - North Staffordshire Carers and St Lukes Hospice.

Dario Gradi will take charge of a Crewe Alex team which will feature Craig Hignett and Neil Lennon, whilst John Rudge will manage the team of ex-Valiants including Jon McCarthy and Steve Brooker.

Naylor, 48, told the Crewe Chronicle: "Both clubs are very close to my heart and I've had a great response from the players.

"The main thing is to raise awareness about Alzheimer's, which my dad suffers from, and to raise money for charity. But it's also important to me that we put on a really good game of football too.

"If it wasn't for Crewe and Dario Gradi I might have been one of those players who never made it, so I have nothing but total respect and love for the club.

“I owe a massive debt to both clubs for what they did for my career.”

Naylor scored 66 goals in four years after Gradi signed him from non-league Droylsden in 1990, he then moved to Vale Park scoring 90 goals in seven successful years.

Sunday’s game builds on the successful match last year between Port Vale and Stoke City, which raised £20,000 for North Staffs mental health charity Approach after 3,844 fans turned up.

Naylor is helped by his friend and fellow organiser and good friend Kevin Jones, whose companies ICL and manorshop.com are sponsoring the game.
