The PFA are saddened by news that former Preston North End and Australian defender Joe Marston has passed away, aged 89.

Joe joined Preston North End in 1950 after being scouted playing in Australia.

He became the first Australian to play in the English FA Cup final in 1954, which North End lost 3-2 against West Bromwich Albion.

Marston returned home to Australia in 1955 and played for Leichhardt.

He was capped 37 times for his national team between 1947 and 1964 and the Joe Marston Medal is awarded to the man of the match in Australia’s A-League grand final.

All at the PFA would like to offer our sincere condolences to Joe's family and friends.
