The PFA funded six former PFA members who were selected to participate in the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

Great Britain Men’s Football team went on to win a silver medal at Summer Universiade after losing 3-2 (AET) to France in an incredible final at the Rubin Stadium, Kazan.

Team GBR included PFA squad members Luke Graham (Hereford United), Simon Richman (Altrincham), Michael Rae (West Auckland Town), Marc Newsham (Boston United), Tom McReady (Limestone College, California) and Alex Dyer (Wealdstone).

Luke Graham and Steve Guinan Luke Graham, currently captain at Hereford United, balances his football career with a part-time course funded by the Professional Footballers' Association, thanked the union for its support: “Without the backing of the PFA I might not have considered going to Russia due to the cost of the trip. I was very fortunate to be part of the players union and they helped me financially to be part of an experience I will never, ever forget.  Being able to perform in Russia, learning a different culture and competing for a medal at a world class event was life changing.”

Alex Dyer (currently at Welling United FC), added: “I would like to say a huge thank you to the PFA for their part in help funding my trip to Kazan. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget. I met some wonderful people and felt extremely proud to represent Great Britain in football and to be a part of the delegation competing for medals as Team GBR. If any footballers are out there studying and qualify for Gwangju, South Korea, I would seriously look at being part of world class football tournament which involves full internationals, 1st team players from all over the world and playing in front of thousands of people.”

Tom McReady (currently studying and playing at Limestone College, California) reflected on his summer: “The experience of representing Team GBR in Russia was incredible and will be a highlight of my life for many years to come. The support received from the PFA has helped me considerably over the last few years and enabled me to continue with my degree. It’s good to know that when one door closes, the PFA one opens and is there for advice and support.”

Getting to the final in Kazan was a huge achievement for the players especially missing out on gold by only the narrowest of margins. Participation in the games is a once in a life time opportunity and the experience of the tournament will be one to saviour for all the players.
