One Year No Beer
Andy Ramage started his career with Leyton Orient and later moved to Gillingham FC. Unfortunately his career was cut short due to injury aged 23. Like many young men, football was Andy’s life and to have it taken away was world shattering.
Unperturbed and with the full support of the PFA, Andy went back to university. Armed with his degree he moved into the world of financial futures and now runs a successful oil brokerage that he co-founded called Aalpha Energy, part of OTC Global Holdings the largest independent commodities brokerage in the world.
Andy tells his story...
To me it felt like the conventional wisdom of business and life suggests that alcohol is required to succeed and enjoy oneself. Two years ago after another heavy night, I realised that this wisdom was wrong and that the opposite is true. I discovered the biggest threat to peak performance in business, sport and life is alcohol. So I got together with a group of like-minded people and we set out a challenge, the ultimate social challenge - ‘ONE YEAR NO BEER’.
Over the year we smashed long held beliefs about alcohol. Not only did we survive, but life got a 1000x better. Although, one thing made our adventure difficult, really difficult - The Social Pressure.
The pressure to keep drinking in our society is massive in all walks of life. In general when people try to give up alcohol they are berated not supported. It was this experience that helped me realise that there are millions of people out there desperate for a break, who cannot beat this social pressure.
OYNB is all about prevention
Inspired by this experience I have set out to help as many people as possible. So I've teamed up with a friend and rival broker, Ruari Fairbairns, I've written a free e-book and created a challenge called OneYearNoBeer.com, which is a 30, 90 and 365 day challenge to put booze in it place. OYNB provides the support and ‘excuse’ people need to smash the social pressure around drinking.
What exactly is OneYearNoBeer?
- OneYearNoBeer is a 30, 90 and 365 day alcohol free challenge.
- People join online, select a start date and choose their challenge.
- Members receive daily email support including tips, tricks and hacks to help them on their adventure.
- For added inspiration - members also gain access to the thriving online community, including forums, blogs and podcasts.
Everyone loves a challenge and OneYearNoBeer is exactly that. No stigma, no labels. If someone can do 30 days, they can do 90 and at this point they can easily take on the year. These challenges will change their relationship with alcohol forever.
How can you help?
If you don’t drink or abstain during the season we would love to know who you are and your story (Contact: firstname.lastname@example.org). What a great way to promote your professionalism and brand to a massive audience.
In general if you could use all social media outlets to talk about OneYearNoBeer, with just a few click’s of a mouse you could help so many people (see links below).
This is a great opportunity for players, managers, owners and all those connected to football to show how professional the modern day game has become. Footballers are fantastic role models and we should celebrate this fact.
Finally please sign up and join in the challenge!
The role of the PFA Coaching Department is to prepare its members for a secondary career within the professional game, possibly within coaching or management.
