If you have any queries regarding taxation issues, no matter how insignificant they may seem to you, you should contact the PFA ...

The tax affairs of professional footballers vary greatly from player to player. We have compiled a booklet (available to members on request from the office) that aims to give you an overview of how tax laws affects professional footballers, from those starting out with scholarships through to retirement. It covers issues arriving from playing in the UK, playing oversees and the issues facing foreign players arriving in the UK.

The notes in this document are for your general guidance and seek to raise awareness of issues affecting you. The brochure also suggests the best way of arranging your affairs so that you comply with your obligations with regard to taxation. No two players’ affairs are the same and what may be appropriate for other players you know, may not necessarily be best suited to you. In all cases you should seek specific advice through the PFA.

Most tax problems are easily solved and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) are increasingly willing to levy penalties if you make mistakes or fall behind with your tax affairs. It is important that you are fully aware of your rights and obligations.
