“Picking Sides” Exhibition

Venue: Unit 19, Ground Floor, Corn Exchange, Exchange Square, Manchester M4 3TR.
Times: The Exhibition continues daily: 12-5pm from Friday 5 October until Sunday 21 October.

There are 15 team sheets in “Pickings Sides”. Bernard Kelly’s original paintings are each a grid of twelve portraits; eleven players plus the manager. The teams, mainly from the era since World War II, are themed in different ways.

Artist Bernard Kelly explains: “These paintings combine two passions, football and Pop Art. “Picking Sides” is a series of paintings that puts our national game centre stage and acknowledges some of the teams, players and managers who’ve left their mark on the history of the English game. All done in a style that owes more to “Roy of the Rovers” than Roy Lichtenstein.”

Picking Sides

As well as the original paintings, “Picking Sides” is an exhibition of framed limited edition artist’s prints. All the prints have been made by Fine Art printer William Chitham. They are in limited editions of 25, numbered and signed by Bernard Kelly. They are available in two sizes: 1000mm x 700mm; 594mm x 420mm (A2).

“The Professional Footballers’ Association is an enthusiastic supporter of artists’ images and expressions of the game. We are very pleased to add Bernard’s work to our collection and to support the exhibition ‘Picking Sides’.”

Gordon Taylor OBE, PFA Chief Executive.

In addition to the team paintings and prints, there are individual portraits of giants of the modern game on larger canvasses.
