There is a wide under-representation of diversity in the football industry. The PFA are committed to addressing this issue for BAME players into coaching and management, at administration and board level. The Rooney Rule UK would redress the recruitment procedures in the professional game by widening representation across all areas.
The Rooney Rule does not guarantee posts for BAME candidates however it enables the opportunity of an interview which currently many qualified coaches are not able to access.
The Rooney Rule is not a quota system it is a process that ensures BAME candidates are included for interviews where there is a job opening.
The Rooney Rule will not reduce opportunities for other groups, it is to increase the pool of talent in the game for the benefit of the whole game.
Critically the rule helps facilitate that the best candidate is employed regardless of ethnicity, gender, ability.
The PFA have been committed to addressing the under-representation of black coaches and managers in football since 2003. We have ensured a focus on increasing coaching qualifications for BAME players and ensuring the PFA Coaching Department is focused on the issues around Equality and Inclusion.
The PFA Coaching Directory is open to all PFA members with FA and UEFA Coaching Qualifications to register and profile their CV and photograph and we urge all clubs to use this whilst recruiting back room staff.
Widening representation across all areas:
- Asian Players
- Women in Football
- Players on Boards
- Greater Diversity in the Game at all levels
