Swansea University is a research-led university that has been making a difference since 1920. Our diverse and welcoming community thrives on exploration and discovery, with a balance of excellent teaching and research, alongside a superb quality of life. The University is among the top 30 elite universities in the UK* and top 300 worldwide**.

Swansea University runs a high performance programme for a select group of sports, including football. Each high performance sport has a dedicated head of stream who works closely with the coaches to give athletes every opportunity to deliver top-level performance. We currently sit 16th overall in the UK for sport***. Our football programme receives:

  • UEFA ‘A’ licence coaching
  • Sports science services
  • Athlete lifestyle management
  • Physiotherapy support
  • Strength and conditioning support

Our services provide enormous opportunity for student athletes to compete in elite competition and our partnerships with local organisations, such as Swansea City FC, provide additional support for elite athletes to reach the highest levels they can. The football programme has access to world class facilities such as the International Sports Village (ISV) and Fairwood Training Ground (The training base of Swansea City FC). The football programme also has access to ‘The Shed’, our elite strength and condition centre.

The football programme competes in the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) Premier South (the top league) every Wednesday. The football club also has a Saturday side which competes in the Welsh Football League, which its divisions feed into the The Welsh Premier League. The Welsh Premier League is the highest standard in Wales offering clubs the opportunity to play in qualification rounds for the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. The football club also competes in the annual Varsity event against Cardiff University, which is the second largest British Varsity event behind Oxford and Cambridge.

Many of our current players and students are also members of The PFA and have been involved in professional football at various clubs such as Swansea City FC and Bristol City FC. The football programme has a worldwide reach, with strong ties to the USA.

Alongside the potential to apply for an education bursary from The PFA, the university also offers Talented Athlete Scholarship Schemes (TASS) to highly talented student athletes with financial benefits up to £3000. An additional support package to this may include; strength and conditioning training, physiotherapy, psychological aid and nutritional advice, all delivered by qualified practitioners. There are many scholarship packages available, cick here for more information.
