Overview

This distance learning course will challenge your perceptions, ideas and understanding of sport coaching and development. You’ll journey into the world of sport, grasping the key theories around the subject and developing the practical skills to put them into action.

The Sport: Coaching and Development distance learning programme has been designed to build your knowledge in a broad range of areas, from coaching practice and techniques, to sport history, sociology and development. Study with MMU and you’ll develop an in-depth understanding of the sport landscape, exploring current issues and evaluating the relevant policies. They’ll also give you a good understanding of sport-based interventions.

With a long history in delivering degrees, particularly distance learning, in sport and coaching, MMU have gained a distinguished, international reputation for the high quality of our learning and teaching, and research and community work within this field. The course benefits from having custom-made iBooks, which allow you to develop your understanding and knowledge at your own pace. The degree has been designed to offer a flexible rate of study and to meet the needs of those in full-time employment, sports professionals and coaches in the UK and abroad.

You will gain a clear understanding of the sport sector, explore current issues that impact on sport, evaluate sporting policies and develop an awareness of sport-based intervention whilst also enhancing your skills and knowledge as coaches and educators.

All students use iPads to download interactive iBooks which have been specially created by staff from the department. The iBooks contain a blend of text, images, interactive tasks, video lectures and other videos.

After an initial compulsory attendance at the induction, the course is taught mainly via distance learning. At both Certificate and Diploma levels, there is one mandatory five-day residential to attend on campus in Manchester. At BSc level, there are two mandatory residential visits.
